I was born in 1951 in San Vito Lo Capo, a small fishing village on the coast of Sicily. I came to America with nothing. No connections, no capital, no blueprint for what came next.
What I built here was G&G Construction, a company that grew from zero to over 700 employees in California's Central Valley. That kind of growth does not happen by accident. It happens because you know your numbers before every single bid goes out the door.
Early on I hired a professional programmer for a full year — paid him weekly — to build me an estimating system. When he delivered it, I opened it up and threw it away. It did not work the way a contractor actually thinks. So I taught myself to program. I built my own system. And I used it to build my business.
That system worked so well that I began selling it to other contractors at $3,000 a copy. I sold many of them. I never received a single complaint.
